What is a Veterinary Technician?
A Veterinary Technician, also known as Vet Tech, uses the skills learned through a Veterinary Technology accredited program to provide day-to-day and emergency animal care under the supervision of a Veterinarian. Vet Techs play an important role in veterinary medicine from performing check-ups to assisting during surgery for small, large, and exotic animals.
What does a Veterinary Technician do?
Graduates of the Vet Tech school at MedQuest College will receive the education and training needed to perform a wide range of responsibilities including:
- Office and Hospital Procedures, Client Relations, And Communications: Management, Communication, And Law and Ethics
- Pharmacy and Pharmacology: Administration and Dispensing
- Nursing: Patient Assessment and Patient Care (Husbandry, Nutrition, Therapeutics, And Dentistry)
- Anesthesia: Patient Management and Equipment/Facility Management
- Surgical Nursing: Patient Management and Procedural Management
- Laboratory Procedures: Specimen Management and Specimen Analysis
- Imaging: Capturing and Processing Radiographs
- Laboratory Animal Procedures
- Avian, Exotic and Small Mammals Procedures
Where does a Veterinary Technician work?
Veterinary Technicians most commonly work in animal hospitals and private clinics including general, emergency, and specialty care. You could also find employment in animal shelters, boarding facilities, and laboratories. With additional certifications, Vet Techs can find employment working with exotic animals or at the zoo.

The Veterinary Technology program at MedQuest College requires students to complete 1160 hours of lecture and lab on campus and 420 hours of externship and clinical rotations off-campus. While on campus and before completing the program each student will meet with the Director of Career Services for assistance with resume writing, preparation of cover letters, interviewing techniques, and networking skills. The career services department provides job placement assistance for all graduates. Alumni in good standing may continue to use any and all placement resources indefinitely at no charge.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVE
The MedQuest College Veterinary Technology Program aims to serve our community and surrounding area by graduating highly skilled veterinary technician professionals. Our Veterinary Technology program promotes technicians to be caring, compassionate, knowledgeable, and technically accurate in animal-related duties. Students will be provided the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills needed for entry-level employment as qualified veterinary technicians. The program promotes graduates to be lifelong learners by providing resources for opportunities for continuing education and giving students an appreciation of the veterinary technician profession. The Veterinary Technology program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA CVTEA) as a program for educating veterinary technicians. Upon completion of the program, graduates can apply to take the Veterinary Technology National Examination (VTNE) through the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). Upon successful completion of the national examination, students will be eligible to submit for licensure by the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners (KBVE).
