What is a Medical Assistant?

Comprehensive Medical Assistants are a vital part of any healthcare team providing direct patient care as well as support to physicians and other healthcare professionals.

What does a Medical Assistant do?

Our medical assistant school, offered in both our Louisville and Lexington campus, provide students with 70% hands-on instruction at an accelerated pace in our fully operational clinical labs. The extensive knowledge and skills learned throughout this program are utilized in many healthcare settings.   As a Medical Assistant you will be responsible for all aspects of patient care from the moment they arrive in your office.

Medical Assistant Responsibilities

  • Assist the doctor as needed with procedures including surgical
  • Set up and administer EKG (Electrocardiogram)
  • Phlebotomy (drawing blood and giving injections)
  • Collect specimen for blood and urine analysis
  • Coordinate laboratory samples and pharmacy prescriptions
  • Prepare exam rooms for visit, sterilize and disinfect rooms and instruments between uses
  • Record and confirm patient’s medical history, verify medications and allergies
  • Take patient vitals including blood pressure, height and weight
  • Manage electronic medical records, handle administrative tasks including daily patient schedule

Where does a Medical Assistant work?

The growth of the aging baby-boom population will continue to increase demand for preventative medical services, which are often provided by physicians.  As their practices expand, physicians will hire more assistants to perform routine administrative and clinical duties, allowing the physicians to see more patients. Medical Assistants can expect to begin their new career in one of the following types of practices:

Externship and Career Services at MedQuest College

Externship

Prior to graduation, students are required to complete an externship under the guidance of area experts. During this externship, students will refine the skills learned on campus as well as work directly with patients for real-life experience.

Career Services

Our Career Services Director provides assistance to graduating students and alumni that include instruction in resume writing, preparation of cover letters, interviewing techniques and networking skills. The college provides job placement assistance for its graduates. Alumni in good standing may continue to use any and all placement resources indefinitely at no charge.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVE

The Comprehensive Medical Assisting Program is designed to prepare students for successful careers as Medical Assistants with knowledge in pertinent aspects of the healthcare field. Students will learn skills that prepare them to perform administrative and clinical duties required in the daily operation of a healthcare facility. Upon completion of the program and meeting all of the course requirements, students will receive a Comprehensive Medical Assisting diploma and will be prepared and eligible to submit their diploma and transcript to apply to take the national certification examination through The American Medical Technologists (AMT). Upon successful completion of the national examination, students will obtain the credential RMA (AMT).

The Medical Assisting program offered at MedQuest College offers flexible schedules for our students. You can choose blended learning, which consists of completing courses in both online and on-campus settings, or you can choose to complete the program 100% on-campus.  Both options are available at our Lexington and Louisville campuses.
