Coronal Polishing for the Dental Assistant

Course Description

This course will be defined by the Kentucky Board of Dentistry’s amended educational requirements for dental auxiliary personnel who will qualify for a Certificate of Coronal Polishing under a dentist’s direct supervision [KRS 313.045(6)]. This course consists of both Didactic and Practical components.

Lecture and Hands-On Training Hours – 8 Education Method: Live Interactive Format

  1. Didactic-Lecture: This will be verified by written exam per guidelines of the Kentucky Board of Dentistry.
  2. Practical – Pre-clinical/Clinical: This will be verified by faculty demonstrations and evaluation of participants at the teaching institution with follow-up per Section 5 of KRS 313.045 (6).
  3. Practical – Clinical Component: Follow-up of five (5) Evaluations of the Practical Clinical Component in the participant’s dental office must be returned within a maximum of 60 days from the date of course completion. Once received, certificates will be issued.

Successful completion of the course requires a 75% pass in a multiple-choice question examination as well as in the pre-clinical and clinical portions. Participants who successfully complete the examination and all required post-course requirements as mandated by the Kentucky Board of Dentistry will receive a Certificate of Completion as part of the required training in Coronal Polishing. A one-year mandatory dental office experience is required within the last three years along with this course to qualify as a “Registered Dental Assistant.” Failure to pass course will result in one opportunity to re-take the entire course at 50% reduction of current course fee within one year.

This course does not offer Dental Continuing Education but is defined as a Training Course approved by the Kentucky Board of Dentistry. KBD course ID KBD0176.

Pre-Registration Requirements

  1. The Kentucky Board of Dentistry requires that all attendees must be employed as a chairside assistant by a licensed dentist for one (1) year or be a graduate of a one- (1) year accredited dental assisting program or a dental assisting program approved by the Board (program certificate must be sent with the Employer Work Verification Form).
  2. Once you have completed the registration form below, download the employer work verification form and submit to (dentalhygiene@medquestcollege.edu). Registration forms AND payment must be received no later than one week prior to the course date – no expectations!  The verification form must be completed by the sponsoring dentist. The form verifies:

    a) Employment;

    b) At least one (1) year chair-side assistance experience; and

    c) Agreement to support the practical-clinical component at the office after the course (see course description).

    Lastly, after registration, but before coming to class:

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants should have an understanding of:

  1. Overview of the dental team
  2. Dental ethics, jurisprudence, and the legal understanding of procedures allowed by each dental team member
  3. Management of patient records, maintenance of privacy, and completion of proper charting
  4. Infection control, universal precaution, and transfer of disease
  5. Personal protective equipment and overview of Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements
  6. Definition of plaque, types of stain, calculus, and related terminology and topics
  7. Dental tissue surrounding the teeth and dental anatomy and nomenclature
  8. Ergonomics of proper positioning of patient and dental assistant
  9. General principles of dental instrumentation
  10. Rational of performing coronal polishing
  11. Abrasive agents
  12. Coronal polishing armamentarium
  13. Warnings of trauma which can be caused by improper techniques in polishing
  14. Clinical competency in a clinical dental setting as set forth in Section 3.2Q of KRS 313.045 (6)

Course Location

MedQuest College Dental Hygiene Clinic 10400 Linn Station Road, Suite 221, Louisville, KY 40223 Free parking is provided in front of the Atrium Center. The dental hygiene clinic is located on the second floor.

Dress Code

Professional office scrubs, closed-toed shoes, and crew-length socks should be worn. MedQuest College will provide PPE including disposable gowns, gloves, masks, and eye protection, as well as any necessary procedural equipment.

*Note: Failure to not be in proper dress code will result in dismissal from the course. No refunds will be issued due to dismissal from the course due to dress code issues.

Course Fee

Tuition: $500

Tuition is payable via check or credit card to MedQuest College – Please call 502-242-0068 to make payment. Tuition includes a continental breakfast, lunch, all needed materials for the course, and the certificate of completion, granted the student passes all course requirements. *Tuition must be received a minimum of one week prior to the course date. Pre-registration is always required.

Refund Policy

A full refund, less a $50 processing fee, will be issued for all cancellations at least one week prior to the course date. Refunds cannot be given for cancellations within one week or after the course starting date. Please note that a request must be received via email before a refund may be processed.

Course Presenters

Course Director: Mr. Garrett B. Westerfield, RDH, MAE
Mr. Westerfield is the Dental Hygiene Clinic Lead at MedQuest College. Mr. Westerfield graduated from the University of Louisville with a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene. Mr. Westerfield practiced clinical dental hygiene for a number of years in the Louisville and Lexington areas, and still actively works throughout the year. He was an adjunct faculty at ATA College where he taught Orofacial Anatomy. Mr. Westerfield earned his Master of Arts in Adult Education from Western Kentucky University. He worked full-time as the Clinic Coordinator at Bluegrass Community & Technical College prior to joining MedQuest College’s Dental Hygiene Program. Mr. Westerfield is the course director for Microbiology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Interpersonal Communications, Head & Neck Anatomy, Dental Anatomy & Histology, General & Oral Pathology, Pre-Clinical Dental Hygiene, Dental Materials, Pain Management, and all clinical courses. He holds an active Kentucky dental hygiene license, and is certified in local anesthesia and nitrous oxide, laser debridement, and holds general supervision privileges. Mr. Westerfield is a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and currently serves as the President for the Kentucky Dental Hygienists’ Association.
