Is a Healthcare Career Right For You?

Take The Free Quiz

Navigating the cost of higher education can feel overwhelming, but it is one of the most important steps in pursuing your professional goals. For many students, the journey begins with Financial Aid 101: Understanding FAFSA, Grants, and Scholarships. At MedQuest College, we believe that transparency is key to helping students make informed decisions about their future in the healthcare industry.

While the world of funding can seem complex, our financial aid department is dedicated to providing the opportunity for students to explore their options. As an accredited college, MedQuest participates in federal student aid programs intended to help qualifying students manage the cost of their education.

The Foundation: What is the FAFSA?

The first pillar of Financial Aid 101 and understanding FAFSA, Grants, and Scholarships is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is used to determine eligibility for federal student aid; actual awards are determined by the school based on program eligibility and enrollment.

  • When to apply: You should complete the FAFSA as early as possible. It is a free application and the primary gateway to federal grants and loans.
  • MedQuest School Code: When filling out your FAFSA, you will need to enter the specific school code for the MedQuest College.

Types of Aid: Grants vs. Scholarships vs. Loans

Understanding the differences between types of funding is a vital part of Financial Aid. Not all aid needs to be paid back, which is why students are encouraged to explore “gift aid” first.

Type of Aid Need to Repay? Basis for Award
Federal Pell Grants No* Financial need (determined by FAFSA)
Scholarships No Merit, background, or specific career goals
Work-Study No Earned through approved part-time employment, subject to availability
Federal Student Loans Yes Federal borrowing with set interest rates

*Grants usually do not need to be repaid except under specific circumstances, such as if a student withdraws before earning the aid, which might require a Return to Title IV calculation.

Exploring Grants and Scholarships

For many in the healthcare field, grants and scholarships are the most sought-after forms of assistance.

  1. Federal Pell Grants: These are awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to students who demonstrate exceptional financial need and have not earned a bachelor’s or professional degree.
  2. Internal & External Scholarships: Many organizations offer scholarships specifically for healthcare students. Whether you are entering Practical Nursing, Dental Hygiene, or Veterinary Technology, Scholarship availability and eligibility vary by organization and are not guaranteed.
  3. Veteran Benefits: MedQuest College is proud to work with veterans and eligible family dependents who can use approved VA education benefits, such as the GI Bill and other military-related assistance programs. Eligibility and benefit levels are determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, not the school.

Compliance & Best Practices

When it comes to financial aid, compliance is our priority. Students should keep the following in mind:

  • No Guarantees: Financial aid is available only to those who qualify. No school can guarantee that a student will receive a specific amount of aid or a specific type of grant.
  • Accreditation Matters: MedQuest College is institutionally accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). This accreditation and program eligibility determine participation in federal student aid programs what allows our students to apply for federal financial aid programs.
  • Professional Judgment: If your financial situation has changed significantly since you filed your taxes (such as a loss of employment), our financial aid officers can discuss a “professional judgment” review to see if your aid eligibility can be adjusted. A “professional judgment” review may be considered on a case-by-case basis and is not guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is there a fee to apply for financial aid?

A: No. The FAFSA is a free application provided by the U.S. Department of Education. You should never pay a fee to submit your federal student aid application.

Q: Does my credit score affect my eligibility for Federal Pell Grants?

A: No. Eligibility for federal grants and subsidized/unsubsidized loans is generally not based on your credit score, but rather on the information provided in your FAFSA.

Q: Can I get financial aid for a diploma program?

A: Yes. At MedQuest College, our diploma programs (such as Medical Assisting and Dental Assisting) are eligible for federal financial aid for those who qualify.

Q: What happens if I withdraw from my program?

A: If a student withdraws before completing their program, a “Return to Title IV” calculation is performed to determine how much aid was earned and what may need to be returned to the government.
