Upon completing your medical assisting program in Kentucky, you will be expected to perform a plethora of different tasks at your job. From assessing a patient’s medical history to ensuring all reports and lab information is filed correctly, a medical assisting career includes exciting and challenging responsibilities. Here are just a few of the daily tasks you’re (you are) likely to do.
Checking Vitals
When a patient arrives at the doctor’s office for an appointment, you will be their first line of contact. Be polite, informative, and let them know you’ll be taking their vital signs before the doctor or nurse arrives. This entails taking their temperature, monitoring their heartbeat with a stethoscope, and recording their blood pressure readings, height, and weight.
Administrative Tasks
Besides assisting patients, you’ll also be involved with the general running of the medical practice. This includes scheduling appointments, handling billing functions, filling out insurance forms, maintaining the confidentiality of patient information, managing petty cash, and keeping records and data organized so that they are easy to find.
Clerical Work
In this multifunctional position, you’ll also be performing many clerical duties and managing the day-to-day operations of the office. This can include answering phones, sorting mail, handling correspondence, and greeting patients. Remember, to be outgoing, friendly, and very organized.
It’s important to keep in mind that your daily responsibilities will vary based on the location of the practice, as well as the legal scope of the state you’re in. For instance, some states require medical assistants to have the proper certifications to perform blood work, ultrasounds, and EKGs. Check what your state’s rules and regulations are.
