WHAT IS A MEDICAL BILLING AND CODING SPECIALIST?
Medical Billing and Coding has two parts. CODING means to take something that is written one way (a diagnosis or prescription for example) and translates it into a code and BILLING means to take the code and make a bill for the insurance company called a claim. This unique career choice allows you to start your new career with the job security and benefits of working in healthcare but far removed from patient care.
WHAT DOES A BILLING AND CODING SPECIALIST DO?
Medical Billing and Coding specialists, also known as Medical Records and Health Information Technicians, play a vital role in any healthcare facility. Major responsibilities that you will be educated and trained on include:
• Read and analyze patient records
• Determine correct codes for patient records
• Use codes to bill insurance providers
• Interact with physicians to ensure accuracy
• Track patient data over multiple visits
• Manage detailed, specifically-coded information
• Maintain patient confidentiality
WHERE DOES A BILLING AND CODING SPECIALIST WORK?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of Medical Billing and Coding Specialists is projected to grow 13% from 2016 – 2026! The demand for health services is expected to increase as the population ages. A wide variety of companies are in need of certified Medical Billing and Coding specialists. EXTERNSHIP AND CAREER SERVICES AT MEDQUEST COLLEGE
Prior to graduation, students are required to complete a 160-hour externship under the guidance of area experts. During this externship, students will refine the skills learned on campus as well as work directly with patients for real-life experience.
Our Career Services Director provides assistance to graduating students and alumni that include instruction in resume writing, preparation of cover letters, interviewing techniques and networking skills. The college provides job placement assistance for its graduates. Alumni in good standing may continue to use any and all placement resources indefinitely at no charge.
The Medical Billing and Coding diploma program provides students with the opportunity to learn insurance coding, processing, medical administrative procedures, and regulatory requirements in the healthcare delivery system. Students in the Medical Billing and Coding program will develop an understanding of diagnosis and procedure coding systems, along with the fundamentals of the medical billing process, needed to seek career opportunities in the field. The program provides students with the skills to perform a variety of medical insurance-related functions in a medical and/or insurance office setting. These tasks include organizing, analyzing, and technically evaluating health insurance claim forms as well as coding diseases, surgeries, and other medical procedures for billing and collection.
