Meet Hunter Brown

Hunter Brown is a recent graduate of the Cardiovascular Sonography program offered at MedQuest College. This hands-on program gives real-world training that can help save lives, literally.

Hunter was just trying to get some extra practice when he scanned his father’s heart last summer – but he found a life-threatening condition that required urgent surgery.

“Everyone in my program we use for practice has a healthy heart,” Hunter said. “I wanted to get someone new and different to practice on.”

His dad agreed to come in for an exam. But the exam was more than either of them expected. As Hunter collected views of the heart, he immediately noticed something was wrong.

Within two weeks of the discovery, Greg Brown underwent open heart surgery, including a bypass, valve replacement and a pacemaker.

Hunter graduated from the program in July 2020 and after receiving offers from hospitals in Cincinnati, Ohio and Louisville, Kentucky he accepted a position with Baptist Health Louisville as a cardiac sonographer.

What is a sonography?

Diagnostic Medical Sonography, often called Ultrasound, uses high-frequency waves to generate images of different organs and blood vessels inside the body.  As an imaging process, ultrasound has a very specific use by providing information that x-ray or other radiologic methods cannot.

What is a sonographer?

Cardiovascular Sonographers, also known as Ultrasound Technicians, perform ultrasound in a variety of settings, working with patients of all ages, who range from healthy to critically ill, both in and out of the hospital.

Cardiac Sonography is ultrasound used to produce images of the anatomy of a patient’s heart chambers, walls, valves and blood vessels.  Vascular Sonography is ultrasound used to produce images of the patient’s veins and arteries. Images provided by the sonographer are used by the physician to diagnose and treat various conditions.
